  Current Events Term 2, 2017

WALT: I can successfully research a current event.
Here is a link to our online modelling book for this unit of learning.

The National Standard that I have been aiming for during this unit of learning is:


  • Year ⅚ :  I can locate and summarise ideas by skimming or scanning, by identifying key words, topic sentences, and key questions, or by using subheadings


Each week we have read a short text about a current event/ topic. We then formed questions based on what we had read.  After this we researched the answers to our questions and finally we gave our opinions on what we had found out.

Use coordinates and the language of direction.

In Maths we have been using to: Use a coordinate system or the language of distance and direction to specify locations and describe paths.

Careers Education C.V. Writing

In CAREERS EDUCATION we have been learning to write a skills based Curriculum Vitae.

A skills based C.V. focuses more on the skills that we have,  rather than our work history.

Three things that I have learned about writing a Curriculum Vitae are:

  1. you have to be skilled
 2.there has to be no spelling mistakes

diary of a wimpy kid

There is a boy named Greg that has a diary and two brothers called Manny and Rodrick.He lives with his Mum and Dad and goes to a high school.


A bit of the story I enjoyed was when Greg was hiding in Rodricks draw because it was funny.

I think the book was cool because it has lots of interesting parts in it.

Games with minimal or no equipment.

My Strengths.  
Some things that I have done well during this unit of learning are trying to get involed because sometimes i dont like the game.

My Next Steps.
Some things I could improve on when playing games with minimal or no equipment are coming up wiith some more modifactions  Because i dont normal have any.

Leadership Article

In writing I have been learning to use basic punctuation that is mostly correct;
- use capital letters, full stops and commas,
- use question marks and exclamation marks,
- use apostrophes,
- use speech marks


I have been especially focussing on using exclamation marks and commas. I have highlighted these in green where I have used them as well as other punctuation that I changed because it was used incorrectly. Here is a piece of my writing that shows this.

One of the leadership traits is goal focused means a person or a group who works hard to acheve results they have set.

When the yr 5s were on camp

where: School

when: Tuesday and Wednesday.

what: I made a game on scratch. The game was about a maze with lava walls and you have to get to the safe zone(green). When you complete it it says you win  - have an ice cream!

I was proud of being able to do the coding to get it to work. Now I would like to be able to code harder levels.

WHAT?
I have been learning to swim.

SO WHAT?
I have been learning back stroke,streamline and freestyle.I learned how to use the correct breathing technique.

NOW WHAT?
I want to get better at my streamline because there is room for improvement.

Word Study - Blog 1 term 3

What?
I am learning to understand how words are formed using roots, prefixes and suffixes.

So What?
I have learned that words that have the root hydra- and aqua- mean water. For example aquamarine is a type of water blueish color with green.

I have learned that words that have the root spect- mean look / see. For example a spectator who watches someone or something.

Now what?
I feel that I have a (good) understanding of the root words aqua-, hydra-, and spect-

IALT: develop my reading comprehension skills

Recently I took an asTTle reading test. I read a number of texts and answered a range of questions to check my understanding and comprehension. The aim is to take a test at a level where I will make some errors so that I can identify what I need to work on to be a more successful reader.

I have looked at the results of my test and identified 3 goals for this term.

My reading goals are:

[1] Consistently read to understand the meaning of a text
[2] Make a conclusion or an assumption
[3] Know what different words mean

# 1 and 2 are about understanding the text, especially by thinking about the text more ‘deeply’.

# 3 is about developing my vocabulary and being able to use the information around a difficult word to make sense of it.

You can help me with [1] and [2] by asking me about the book I am reading at home;
  • about the characters, setting, plot and resolution (fiction)
  • Get me to explain why I believe the characters have acted in certain ways and how this influences the plot and outcome of the story
  • Ask me to make a conclusion about different aspects of the story and encourage me to make assumptions about characters, events, moods and what might have happened in the text if the character [s] acted, behaved, made different choices.

You can help me with [3] by;

  • encouraging me to explain in my own words what I think a word means
  • helping me to identify parts of a word that might help explain its meaning (e.g., in submarine the ‘sub’ means under so that will help with making an educated guess about the meaning of the word
  • encourage me to come up with words that have a similar meaning, or look in a thesaurus for words with similar (synonyms) and opposite meanings (antonyms).

Writing Refletion

WHAT?
This week I am reflecting on one of my writing goals

IALT: Improve my writing by learning how to:

* use a variety of sentence starters

This week I have been focusing on how to write a drop-in clause

SO WHAT?
Here is an example of a drop-in clause

Mr Forman is our teacher.
He loves his red car.
Mr Forman, who is our teacher, loves his red car.

Mr Forman is the subject of the sentence.
We change ‘He’ to ‘who’
We place commas around the clause we ‘drop-in’

MY EXAMPLES:
Here are two examples of a drop-in clause that I have created.
[1] Ashton, who likes rugby, is awesome.
[2] The footballer, who played for the Crusaders, was kicking the ball.
